Use Resources
What I did to research:
On the 25th of November 2011 I started browsing the internet to find research that would help me with writing up my extended project dissertation. I spent four weeks at home and college researching stories, facts and other information that I could include in my extended project. I started off within the first two weeks by researching using the internet as my source, although I found some helpful information that I did include in my extended project the rest of the research that I needed to find wasn’t showing up when I browsed for it, and if it did show up it wasn’t the answer I was looking for.
However I found a solution to my research, instead of finding my research on the internet ( which I’m sure most people would say is the easiest and best way to research information) I looked through a ton of old newspapers that were all gathering up next to the fireplace in my house. I was very surprised about how many positive and negative articles there were in these papers that talked about the Social Network. The majority of newspapers were Sunday times, Daily mail or the Sun all of which I found extremely helpful for my research.
Bibliography
Before you see my research, please take note that this was all researched before I started writing my essay. So a majority of the websites from the internet that I researched I did not use in the end. Even though a large sum of my research was done by looking through news articles in newspapers at home I will still write down the newspaper name and what the article was about, but I obviously can’t give it a link because it isn’t from the internet.
Internet research:
When I started writing up my essay for my extended project barely any of this internet research was used.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00dv9hq - This website explain what the Social Network is and how it functions.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_network - This is the only research I got of Wikipedia because I don’t like using that website unless necessary. The reason behind this is because although Wikipedia has all the answers and research I need, its sources can very unreliable at times. The page I looked at was also discussing what the Social network is and its purpose.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8521598.stm - This research tells explains why it so dangerous to be to open or public with your details such as address or phone numbers because it makes it easy for Burglars to see a status on your wall saying “on holiday” and all they have to do is look at your profile details and then they know where you live. The research stresses allot about how important it is to make your social network accounts as private as possible.
http://www.identity-theft-scenarios.com/dangers-of-social-networking-sites.html - This website talks about Identity theft and the consequences it can have on you. It also tells you how try your best to prevent it while still using the Social Network.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/5230506.stm - This BBC news article talks about how US children are likely to be banned from accessing the social network (namely Facebook)in the future at school.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/nagpur/Social-networking-sites-fast-becoming-anti-social/articleshow/10776009.cms Times of India, talks about how hackers are accessing other people accounts and putting rude and explicit text and imagery on their accounts and then sending to their friends. The reason behind this is unclear, although the article refers to it as cyber bullying.
http://newsflavor.com/world/usa-canada/facebook-party-leads-to-parents-deaths/ -This article is about a 17 year old boy who murders his parents because he sends out FB invitations to a party at his house but his parents say no after he sends them.
http://www.ranker.com/list/the-13-craziest-deaths-caused-by-social-media/whitney-milam?page=3&format=BLOG&sortby=&sortdir=&limit= - This article talks about deaths that have been caused by the social network.
http://www.smh.com.au/technology/technology-news/creator-of-the-antifacebook-a-social-network-with-privacy-20111117-1nl0e.html - This article talks about a man who made a social network site very similar to Facebook only much more private and safer.
Newspaper article research:
Nearly all of this research from newspaper articles was included.
1: My first research was from The Sun which was talking about an Earthquake that took place in Easter Turkey in October 2011. The article was mainly talking about the damage caused by the effects of the Earthquake but then I saw a small paragraph inside the article talking about a boy who had been rescued because the boy tweeted on his phone where his address was and hours later he was pulled out of the rubble of the house he had been trapped in.
2: This article was taken also from The Sun. It talked about a man named Huw Williams whose life was saved when he made pages on the social network talking about how urgently he needed a bone marrow transplant. A man named Mike Hogman saw one of these pages and contacted Huw and told him he would do the donation which in turn saved William’s life.
3: This article is from the Sunday times and discusses cyber bullying with subtopic inside talking about a university student named Graham Mallaghan who attended Kent University. Graham was cyber bullied by over 300 people who made a Facebook page dedicated to taking the mick out of him.
4: This article is from The Daily Mail which talks about how people are becoming addicted to social networking. It says that many teenagers and young adults buy smart phones deliberately so that they can use Facebook and others social network sites with ease while on the go. The article also talks about how people are becoming more reliant on communicating by keyboard rather than verbally communicating.
5: The Sunday Times had an article that was talking about how peaceful protestors in Russia were making anti-government videos and uploading them to YouTube and spreading them over the social network to bring awareness to people about how corrupt the Russian government was.
6: I found a massive article from The Sun newspaper talking about chat rooms such as Chatroullete and the dangers they posed to people when people using.
In my essay for the massive subtopic I included towards the end of my essay talking about the London riots that took place in August 2011 I used research from several articles from these three newspaper brands. The sun, Daily mail and The Sunday Times.
