Powerpoint presentation for my dissertation

Did I achieve my aims and meet the original brief?

I did achieve my aims because my aim was to complete the dissertation without doing it badly (rushing it) and doing it within the deadline given to use for our extended project. I did meet the original brief on everything except timing; I set myself rough deadlines for the brief I wrote at the very beginning of being told about our extended project.

The only reason I didn’t stick to my brief deadlines is because I wrote up some more accurate deadlines which I stuck to using instead which in my opinion was a better choice than the roughly written deadlines I had done for my brief. You can see this better version of my set deadlines in the “Manage” section of my extended project blog.

How I coped for different stages of my extended project?

When we were told to decide what kind type of extended project we wanted to do I chose instantly dissertation because I know from past times at school and College that I have coped and handled dissertations very easily with a good standard of quality.

I did have a week gap to decide what I wanted to do my extended project on where I was slightly lost and didn’t know what to choose my topic as. But then I remembered the riots and how the media had connected it to the social network. I knew this would be a brilliant dissertation for me provided I had all the research and information to include.

The next stage of my dissertation was the planning. I decided what kind of topics I wanted to include in my dissertation at this point. This is where I decided because I was doing an essay styled argument I wanted to keep it as fair and equal as possible without seeming biased. I decided the best way I would be able to handle this would be for when I’m writing the body of the essay I would have positive information for the social network followed by negative information against the social network and I would repeat this to the end. To help keep me more organised I gave codenames for the negative information and a different codename for the positive information. NEG was negative and POS was positive.

The next stage was the layout which I handled with ease presenting the layout as introduction about what my dissertation is about what the social network is which was followed by the main body of the essay and then completed by the summary.

It was now time for me to start researching information to include in my dissertation which in my opinion was my hardest step. I knew what I wanted to look up and find out about to include in my extended project but it never seemed to show up when I searched for it and if it did it was usually in the context that I didn’t want or couldn’t understand.

I was starting to struggle with this stage of my extended project but a week after research I found a solution which was a load of old newspapers next to my fireplace. Most of these newspapers had at least one article relating to what I was doing my extended project on. Best still was three or four of the newspapers dated back to August 2011 which gave me a lot of useful information about the riots. I was no longer struggling with research now.

The next step was writing the body of the essay. It took me a long time to complete the body of the dissertation but in my opinion that means that I have put effort and detail into it.  Besides although it may have taken me longer than I would have thought to write the body of the dissertation I still did it before the deadline so I see no need to see this as a negative point.

Did I keep my log book up to date and did I find it useful?

I found that my log book was the key to me being so organised and up to date during the time I was working on my extended project. I would update it after every lesson so that when I looked at it I could see exactly what I had done and what I hadn’t done yet. It also showed me where I needed to carry on from. It especially helped me with meeting all the deadlines I set for individual parts of my extended project to be complete. You can see these set deadlines in the “Manage” section of my extended project blog.

What would I do differently if I had to do this extended project again?

To be honest there aren’t many major things I would change if I had to do my extended project again, but I shall list all the changes (minor or major) I would make if given the chance.

1: I should have been more prepared for research , I knew what I wanted to look for, but I hadn’t prepared myself for how I would find what I was looking for. If I was given the chance to do this again I would make a section in  my planning that would discuss all the possible sources I should use to obtain the information and research that I required for my dissertation. For example I would list sources such as the library, newspapers, internet, talking to people who had answers to the questions I needed to know the answers for to include in my dissertation.
